For the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, FifthColor helped bring the Games to life through thoughtful signage design, production, and on-site installation. Across four venues across the University of Minnesota campus and more than 3,700 signs, the team created a cohesive visual experience that celebrated the athletes while bringing the energy and spirit of the Games to every venue.

The Challenge

For a recurring event of this scale, the client wanted to elevate the 2026 USA Games signage experience beyond previous Games. Meeting that expectation across thousands of signs and multiple venues required creative precision, close collaboration, and careful attention to detail.

The project presented several unique challenges: elevating the signage while staying aligned with the established USA Games brand, translating detailed client feedback into polished, production-ready designs, and navigating multiple rounds of revisions to ensure every design met the client’s vision. The team also had to create a cohesive experience across the University of Minnesota, Graduate Hotel, National Sports Center, and Mall of America Fan Zone, coordinate design, production, and installation across every location, and balance sponsor and operational requirements with creative storytelling that kept the athletes at the center.

As FifthColor’s first multi-venue event of this scale, the project required the team to seamlessly manage creative development, client collaboration, production, and on-site installation from start to finish.

The Solution

FifthColor created an integrated design, proofing, production, and installation process that could scale across thousands of signs and multiple venues while maintaining one cohesive visual experience.

Designed at Scale

The team developed and proofed more than 3,700 signs and digital activations, many of which moved through multiple tiers of review and approval. Through close collaboration with the USA Games team, FifthColor quickly learned the client’s visual preferences and applied that direction across the growing body of work.

Built 21 Sponsor Overview Decks

When venue sponsors needed to preview their signage, FifthColor created 21 customized decks covering 16 sports and additional event venues. Each deck brought operational and specialty signage, rendered applications, venue maps, and customized signage keys into one clear view for sponsors.

Turned Proofing Into a More Efficient Process

Rather than treating the sponsor decks as a separate deliverable, the team incorporated them into the signage proofing process. This allowed the client to review signage in the context of each venue and helped accelerate approvals across the broader project.

Managed On-Site Installation

FifthColor took the project from screen to venue, coordinating installation across the University of Minnesota, Graduate Hotel, National Sports Center in Blaine, and the Fan Zone at Mall of America. On-site, the team directed installers, managed placement, answered questions, and adapted to the fast-moving demands of event setup.

Putting Athletes at the Center

Throughout the creative process, FifthColor looked for opportunities to feature athlete imagery from previous Games. The result was signage that felt personal and celebratory, not simply a collection of logos and sponsor messages.

The Results

The result was more than a successful signage program, it was a unified environment that made athletes feel celebrated, sponsors feel represented, and each venue feel connected to the larger USA Games experience. It delivered a first of-its-kind event experience: for FifthColor, the 2026 USA Games marked the first time the team managed and installed an event of this scale across multiple venues and locations, bringing together creative, print, project management, and event execution under one cohesive experience.

Why It Worked

Throughout the project, one question guided the creative process: what would the athletes want to see? The athletes were the true champions of the Games, so FifthColor looked for opportunities to incorporate imagery from previous Games wherever it made sense. This kept the signage from becoming simply a collection of logos and sponsor messages and instead created an environment where athletes could see themselves reflected throughout the experience.

“From the very beginning, [FifthColor] stepped up not only with a generous contribution to support the Special Olympics USA Games and its mission, but with a true partnership that carried us through every step of the journey. From the initial venue tours through final execution, [FifthColor] helped us navigate the incredible complexity of bringing two major locations and 20+ venues to life—each with its own unique requirements, challenges, and opportunities.”
